CHRIS BITTEN – Counsellor.
Thoughts About Addiction
I have developed expertise in the area of addictions. Addictions can be to substances (alcohol and drugs) or to processes (pornography, gambling, work, etc.) They cause a great deal of suffering, both to the person who has the addiction and to those he or she is close to.
In B.C. the treatment of addictions can be very haphazard. There is often a wait for various community-based supports: detox, outpatient and inpatient treatment, relapse prevention, education. My support and knowledge can provide consistency and encouragement throughout the process of recovery from addictions.
Often, people with addictions suffer from other difficulties such as depression, a history of trauma, a troubled family background. I can offer skills in identifying and treating these “concurrent disorders” while maintaining a focus on recovery from the addiction itself.
I make frequent use of community-based resources when appropriate, since addiction can be very isolating, and community organizations offer places where new relationships can be formed that support recovery.
